Day 11 – The ONE Thing

500 Words Challenge , ,
SO what happened to the time? Where did it go? I don't have a good answer for that question. Time is fleeting just like sand through and hourglass. These are the "days of our lives" :-) A little nostalgic humor for you . Should I write everyday? I think that is a good goal to have. The question is how will I achieve that goal? The book "The ONE Thing" has opened my eyes to the concept of blocking time to focus on your "one thing". That is a a good idea, but a scary one as well. The idea that i should dedicate 4 hours a day to the accomplishment, or better said, focus on my one thing. WOW…

Day 10 – Write about writing

500 Words Challenge , ,
This should be easy. I have done this for a while and only need to say what I am thinking. Of course a more structured approach would be better, but this will do for now. The concept of just getting words on the page seems to be the best way for me. Get it down and organize later. I love writing. It takes me to my happy place. A place I can see growing and developing from day to day. The simple act of showing up and getting something down has been amazing. It has helped me find a place to go to be myself. I write because it feels good. Even when it is hard. To push that publish…

Day 9 – Teach Something

500 Words Challenge , ,
But what? I know this is a way to get us to try different styles of writing, but I cant seem to come up with anything. Should I fake it until I make it? Does that even work? There is a fear for me that just came up. What if I get called out on the topic? What if my information isn't exactly correct. Jeff, is that what you intended? Ok I'll go with something I know. I want to be profound, but there will be time for that later. Right now I will describe something I know. Riding the public trains in Frankfurt Germany. The SBahn or Schnell Bahn (fast train) as it is called it the first part…

Day 8 – Make a list

500 Words Challenge , ,
Today is list making day! Like Rex Manning Day at Empire Records. Please tell me someone gets that reference (comments below). I have thought a little about the and think I have a plan. I like to mind-map or write outlines for this kind of thing, but why not try something new? The great thing about something new like this is it may be helpful. This is a list I have wanted to capture for a while. A brain dump for ideas about a blog series as Jeff suggested. Fasching is a big part of the culture here in Germany and I want to write about it. There are so many topics and subjects because there are so many traditions…

Day 5 – Write What You Know

500 Words Challenge , ,
Today I will write about an unforgettable event in my life. It had already been an exausting day. We had been up since O Dark Thirty as we say in the Army and the sun had set again. My team was preparing to fly into Albania with the first wave of US Soldiers in preparation for what we thought would be the impending invasion of Kosovo. The year was 1999 and it was April I think. Preparations had been going on for weeks. Everything from packing our personal gear, uniforms, boots, personal hygiene products. To getting our equipment ready. Packing the truck, checking the radios. Training was being conducted to bring our wartime skills up to the highest level. We…
